HIV/AIDS
AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a virus that destroys the body's ability to fight off infection. People who have AIDS are very susceptible to many life-threatening diseases, called opportunistic infections, and to certain forms of cancer. Transmission of the virus primarily occurs during sexual activity and by sharing needles used to inject intravenous drugs. While there are drugs available to prolong life, they can be cost prohibitive and new strains are becoming resistant. There is no cure for AIDS. Nearly a million Americans are currently infected with HIV.

15-30% of those infected with HIV/AIDS contracted it during their teen years” (Add Health study, American Journal of Public Health).
